Re: holidays
yep tried them both the holidays are fine but the flights are bank breaking the add ons for the flights are disgusting
Re: holidays
I'm no expert but buying flight only, then trying to book hotels direct might be a good route. Hotels sell there rooms to travel companies, any space they have to fill themselves. Suspect many Spanish hotels are not exactly being over-run with local holiday makers!
Find hotel in brochure, then see if they have there own website. Did this a few years ago to Lanzarote.
Only downside is you don't have some of the cover
you get with a package deal. Example if you arrive a day late due to
your flight delayed for 24 hours, your room might be lost.
Unlikely but wouldn't happen with package deal.
Ps......TAKE ME!

Re: holidays
Just seen this thread a bit late, but may be useful for your next holiday.
Try http://www.travelrepublic.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and select 'holidays' on radio button. It trawls through low cost flight options for your destination, and also offers cheaper options to look at if you can change date by a day or two, or alter airports. It then adds massive selection of hotels which can be searched by all sorts of different criteria, price, star, resort, etc so basically you are building your own holiday but with them doing the hard work of crawling through flight options. You can then add in bus transfer, airport parking or whatever else , if you need those services.
I always use it as starting point. Good tip, when you find the hote you want, then run it through http://www.trivago.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; which searches the hotel search engines ( like laterooms ec) and you may find same hotel cheaper there, but Travelrepublic has done all the intial hard work for you, you are now just making that same holiday even cheaper if you can. We saved £80 on a £400 hotel deal by doing it this way.
One issue to watch out for, if the site finds a Ryanair flight as the cheapest option, which often it might, then a booking fee of £6 each way is added right at the end before paying, just same as Ryanair do. So another tip here is if you have a Ryanair Cash Passport Card , then use Travelrepublic to find your flight and hotel, then book the hotel via Trivago, and the Ryanair flight direct with Ryanair.
These options all depend on how tight you are, but Sophie sounds a true Yorkshire person, like me. If you save enough on one trip, you may be able to go again later.

Re: holidays
If you fancy a holiday in one of the forests in GB then have a look at http://www.forestholidays.co.uk/cabins.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
These are all cabins that are owned by the Forestry commission and are set in stunning forests near Lochs etc in Scotland, I have stayed in a few in Scotland and can heartily recommend them for the quality - price and location.

Scotland is breathtaking anytime of year, but pack plenty of waterproofs. I grew up in Glasgow and it feels like it rains every day.
For cheap foreign holidays if you are not too bothered where, a good start point is here
http://www.onthebeach.co.uk/deal-finder" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I have booked a number of good holidays with separate flights, hotel and hire car.

Re: holidays for future reference
My dad recommended http://www.skyscanner.net" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; for flights, and they do hotels too...
